I am a:

  • Canadian
  • 6'6" tall man with 36" pants inseam
  • University student on a low budget ($250-300)

and am looking for a bike. Obviously that's a "tall" order but hopefully you all have some ideas. I don't currently own a bike and the only bikes I've owned in the past were Supercycle MTBs or similar. I intend to commute to work on roads and paved trails, and also ride a bit on gravel trails.

I think what I want is a hybrid MTB/road bike, but maybe you have better ideas. It needs to be available for purchase or shipping in Canada for less than about $300.

Don't think that product recommendation questions are accepted here. In any case, look at used hybrids such as Marin, Norco, Giant, etc. Also check out Police Auctions if you're in Southern Ontario. Canada's a big country, and used bicycle availability will vary greatly depending on what city you're in. – fideli Feb 13 at 21:29

While we try to stay away from giving specific product recommendations here, as they become dated quickly, based on you budget here's a couple pointers. Look for a good used bike, that is almost the right size. Customize it with a layback seatpost or a longer stem in order to make it fit better. You probably won't find a new bike for your size that is good quality in that price range. – Kibbee Feb 13 at 22:03

As has already been mentioned, product recommendations don't fit Stack EXchange sites well. Besides becoming dated, the answers also tend to be subjective. However, if you can rephrase your question to ask what features are desirable and what geometry constraints there are on a frame for someone your size, you will likely get better responses. – jimirings Feb 13 at 23:29
