we have about 10 bike shops near my home. it is easy to differentiate between the guys who "want to sell bikes & make lots of cash" and "the guys who RIDE, who love bikes, buy/fix/sell, go on long rides and rider-getaways...make $ as a side-benefit." it is the latter category you want to parse your "best" store to.
I'm a daily rider, but also a discriminating connoisseur...usually when I bring my bike into Bill's shop for repairs; he lends me one of his. He mostly sells Norco (high-high-end) and similar, so I roll out with a $5000 bike even if it's a used 2014. New bikes go >10k, he rides/collects road/hybrid/all-terrain/cruisers/mtn -- u name it. his shop can also fix any problem on any bike - that's key.
as exchange, he gets to borrow my bike; also he hasn't ever charged me for labor; a fair temp-trade; this is not uncommon between "bike guys" at least in California. Across the street is a similar place, where when I came in to shop; they didn't even want to talk about bikes....wtf? Catty-corner is an 'electrico'-shop...the owner doesn't even ride them and I felt like he was waiting for me to leave beacause i didnt have $4000 on me for a sub-par electric cruiser. likewise down the street; an old guy who rents electrics; he's a rider, but he does it to keep in shape - im not convinced that he LIKES to ride! Just south is an old guy who also likes to "talk bike" if not that his inventory was crap id buy one from him - he is legit. He also does free tune-ups, gives me discounts and comped repairs for parts-only.
note how I differentiate between the "howya doin?' shops and the "are you buying anything? no? ..." shops.
Find the shops that like to ride; especially shops that are into the same kind of rides as you are. you'll save money - whether done for profit or love, all these shops operate right on the margin -- the hobby guys own shops to justify spending 50k on 4 new bikes to their wives![and the (n+1) bike]
that's the shop you want to go to; save $, chat it up and they'll become a fast-friend if they dig your bike(s) -- these guys employ the best techs too. theyre the best cuz, like me, left to my own devices, I fix-up/outfit/upgrade bikes even when they aren't broken!
choose bike-love (or ocd) over bike-profit-motive shops.
