Anyone ridden from LA to SF? (or SF to LA?) Just curious about the best routes, places to stay along the way etc.

Cheers!

There is an official Pacific Coast Route. Lots of stuff on the web. hobobiker.com/pacific_coast_route_touring_cyclist_report – fady Apr 21 '11 at 18:19

Can you reword the question so it's more suited to SE? Currently the answer is "yes, someone has ridden that route". Please make it more specific to what you want to do. – Мסž Apr 22 '11 at 2:59

There's a big SF to LA charity ride in about a month: aidslifecycle.org/life-on-the-event/route – freiheit May 2 '11 at 23:59

Please do consider re-writing this question so that it's answerable according to current Stack Exchange guidelines, and I'd be happy to reopen it. For example, making this more specific would help. If, however, you want to chat or brainstorm routes, I highly recommend the Crazy Guy on a Bike forums, I've gotten a lot of good information there. – Neil Fein May 4 '11 at 17:42
So bicycles stackexchange can't be used for route discussions? Maybe new forum should be started then? I'm very interested in global routes as I ride all over the place. – Ville M May 9 '11 at 21:24

Only managed as far as SF to San Luis Obispo, after that I turned right and headed for the National Parks. My top tip is to start your journey in a Youth Hostel - reason being that you will find others travelling your route and sometimes a bit of teamwork can help get up and down Big Sur and the other delights on the way. I was fortunate enough to meet up with a Swiss guy that new all the ins and outs of cycletouring but was a bit shapeless on the hills.

Stick to Highway 1 all the way and you should be fine, even in mid-summer weather. There are a few towns that are unexpectedly small, e.g. Lucia which is on the maps but not actually big enough for getting meaningful supplies. My other tip is to be realistic about what you plan to stop off for on the way. I chose not to go to the Hearst mansion or the aquarium in Monterey, looking back on it now I do not feel regret for cycling past what others clearly saw as top tourist destinations.
