The basic idea is that the rider can remove the rear wheel, turn it around, and have a different gear in the rear without the aid of freewheel or lockring removal tools.

The most common type of flip-flop hub is a fixed/free hub; that is, a fixed-gear cog on one side and a freewheel on the other. Less common are fixed/fixed and free/free versions.
