I'm a bit pusher who occasionally turns a wrench on bikes. I enjoy building and maintaining wheels. My main ride is currently a 2011 Argon-18 Krypton with SRAM Force, Hawk Racing BB, and Hawk Racing Wheels.

comment Why does my floor pump only fill a presta valve tire after a pop sound?
If it's a loud pop, keep an eye on the pressure gauge...you can overload the hose on the pump while trying to equalize...especially if the presta is stuck for some reason.

comment What are the side effects of blood doping?
Mostly correct, but one salient point...the benefit from altitude does not require actually training in it. You only need to be at altitude for 8-10 hours a day to get the benefit. In fact, training at altitude can cause more muscle damage than at sea level and the lower oxygen pressure lengthens the recovery time. Most elite athletes that utilize high altitude sleep (spend their evening and night) at altitude but come down to sea level for their daily training.

comment Are Hövding helmets safer than regular helmets?
smf.org/standards/b/b90astd is a good read. Especially when you realize that the bike helmet testing has very little to do with testing how safe your head will be in a crash (unless you are already stopped and off your bike at the time).

comment How to clean a bike after muddy/sandy cyclocross race (or mountain bike ride)
Obviously, YMMV, but...I've intentionally tried to be "bad" with a powerwasher and then taken the stripped the bike down, removing the BB, headset, etc. and I remain unconvinced that you can do any serious damage (except maybe to the paint finish) to a bike with a powerwasher. That said, TR's advice is good. I'll add that anytime you use degreaser, lube...lube a lot...afterwards.

comment Is it possible to perform tricks with 100% safety during commuting?
Oh, but you can probably get good enough to feel confident to do these at speed. Be careful of those around you and be willing to sacrifice a bit of blood/sweat/tears every so often.

comment Sounds like there is stickiness on my tire, but there isn't!
You might also have a bit of moisture in between tire and tube. This can make a strange sound and it would happen once per revolution. Easy to check and you might notice something else while the rubber is off.

comment Is conserving energy something to do on a day-to-day basis, or over the week?
This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but you might also try going harder towards the end of the week. I try to vary the intensity of my commute home to keep my body guessing. I'll be tired come Friday night and I usually take Sat and Sun off, but I'm also getting more fit as I go.

comment Could I be pumping up my tyres the wrong way?
With that pump you should have no problem getting into the 110 range. If you are seating the head as Kibbee mentions and you are still having issues, then something's not working somewhere. Swing by your LBS with your pump.

Drops are less stable? Need different bars or a better fit.

comment Avoiding being wiped out after work commute?
Just about any brand. 2% has the "right" ratios, but I like to mix my own with non-fat. This should be a recovery drink - right after your finish, ideally within 15 minutes.

Not with a LeMond Revolution Trainer :)

comment what is the ideal presta tube valve stem length
Agree, make sure "comfortable inflation" is with all your pumps (some need more stem). Roll with a stem sized for your rim, carry a spare that will work for you and your buddy. If you are really nice, also carry a valve extender.
