I'm a freelance multimedia designer with a background in typographic design. Slowly I started learning HTML and CSS, and I love when I see the page getting together and fortunately still love to see the result of a rendered PHP page (isn't that like magic?). Needless to say that I'm self-taught, and I love graphic and typographic design + web/interface design.

What I like, know and am learning (programming):

  • XHTML 4 (learning 5)
  • CSS 2 (learning 3)
  • Javascript (+jQuery)
  • PHP
  • mySQL (basics only)
  • Applescript
  • Shell (basics only)
  • Actionscript
  • Lingo (Director, not using it so much this days)

When I'm not working I play guitar (all kinds) and ride my bicycle(s).

comment How much “play” is normal in a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub?
Thanks, I'm going to disassemble it any way, but it's good to have this "confirmation".

@armb can you check a functional one? also write the answer here saying what is the normal play of the hub, and I'll accept it.

Thanks, I don't know anyone else with a SA, so if you can try one I would be gratefull. I'm anxious to disasemble it, it will be a fun experience, especially the assembly (the tough part) :)

comment Why does chain slip when I move my pedals?
Mind you that when a bicycle is upside down, not all will behave the same as in the standard position! If possible try to test/adjust in the normal position.

@armb I updated the question with an aditional image showing the adjusting part connected to the cable in the hub (not the same as your picture). This image was taken from this video: youtube.com/watch?v=9Bma6jVvUb8

@armb The hub still has that cable clamp that can be screwed into the adjusting part shown here. I have no idea how to take it out without destroying the cable, which in turn will make it impossible to place into a new cable! if it had a slot, I would pass it through, but it is a cylinder all the way.

it is a three speed hub, corrected it and added the "AW" code to identify it.

@armb nice one, I didn't catch those letters, in my case it says AW, and I know now that it is a three speed hub, corrected on the question. You mean the play displayed is acceptable?

I think that can't be that simple, because in the case of a SA cable, the tips are really important, and need to have a lot of resistance, not like the "normal" cable tips where you can replace them. In this case, both tips are subject to a lot of stress, tip 1 is the one connected to the switcher, and tip 2 is keeping the adjusting part connected to the hub and that can't be replaced in the "normal" way (at least not as with the brass tips).
