comment Why aren't Tour de France riders going any faster?
@tdc - It may be true that things like weather may average out over the course of 3 weeks and it could be expected that over a period of decades these may be similar. I don't think that things like this would necessarily apply for things like to things like course length, change in elevation, etc.

comment need cycling eyewear, but fogging is a big problem
If you are finding ski goggles too bulky get some downhill mountain bike goggles. They work great when you are wearing a helmet and they are much easier to find in clear than ski goggles. They also help to keep your face a bit warmer.

comment Is it better to have mountain bike tyres for the winter?
The key to not carrying snow is not having your lugs too closely packed. You want lots of space between them.

comment Equipping a commuter bike
I love my clipless (shoes that attach to pedals) in the city. The main advantage is that you can pedal backwards with a single foot while you other foot is on the pavement. If you get crankbrothers style pedals then they are easy to walk in too!

Another con is the weight.

@alex This may be an advantage. If people see you but are noticeably confused this may increase their caution.

@Kibbee, Excellent point. Do you think this is an important ability for winter cycling? Personally, I do. On artery roads it isn't critical but on unplowed and rutted streets I often throw my weight around on the bike to keep traction.

comment Is it worth getting a suspension seat post as a cheap alternative to full suspension bike?
Hi Mick, what kind of bike are you riding? If you are sitting "too upright" this can occur. Your back will not have any spring to it and all bumps will run right up your spine. I would also suggest getting some wider tires and running them at a lower pressure.

comment Recommended handlebar style for short daily commute?
I would drop the suspension. Extra weight to carry up hills with very little utility on a city bike.

comment Self-made studded tyre with glue?
May work great for the rear tire but it will not help to keep your front tire from sliding out. Zip ties will provide some forward/backward bite but zero side to side bite.
