I ride for fitness, enjoyment and an easier, less stressful commute.

On weekends I ride a custom (by Kennedy's Cycle Fit) road bike with Campag gear.

To commute I ride an SE Lager fixed (love the fixie!)

With the family I ride a Shogun hybrid.

I love to tinker with my bikes and won't go to a mechanic unless it's for something advanced or unfamiliar.

comment What's the purpose of cycling gloves?
+1 for protection - that's the main reason I use them. Also I find gloves give better grip on bar tape than bare hands.

comment What bicycle design factors affect stopping power?
@lantius - 13.9 seconds sounds like too long to brake from 30km/h. I just did the sums and got 1.39 seconds in about 15 meters. Does that sound better?

comment Do mudguards/fenders help? If so, what are the best for a fixie commuter?
Sweet! Which version of the Planet Bike guards are you using? They look a little more robust than the roadracers.

Hey another Lager rider! The roadracers fit amazingly well, although I'm running 23mm front and back so I don't know how they'd go with 28s.

comment My LBS does not carry fixed-gear/single-speed parts. What next?
I've had very different experiences. I've been to a few shops and asked them to order me a specific part from a range they stock and they haven't called me back. As much as I'd like to support my LBS, sometimes online is so much better.

comment What bicycle design factors affect stopping power?
Wow, I always assumed that a bike could stop quicker than a car, so I was never concerned with how much space I left in front of me. Thanks for the linked article. I'm going to have to leave more space in front of me from now on. Cheers!

Do you have any citations/studies that back this up? I'd be interested to know how the typical braking distance compares between cars, motorbikes and bicycles.

comment Difference between road pedals and MTB pedals
The other pedal that nobody's mentioned is the Speedplay (speedplay.com). I haven't used them and they seem to be expensive, but I saw a number of TDF riders using them, so that can't be all bad.

+1 Road pedals are so much harder to get your foot into and out of. I prefer MTB pedals for almost all circumstances.

I updated my question with progress with the new technique. The chain has already died after only 353 km. Any other thoughts?
