I ride for fitness, enjoyment and an easier, less stressful commute.

On weekends I ride a custom (by Kennedy's Cycle Fit) road bike with Campag gear.

To commute I ride an SE Lager fixed (love the fixie!)

With the family I ride a Shogun hybrid.

I love to tinker with my bikes and won't go to a mechanic unless it's for something advanced or unfamiliar.

comment Why ride a single-speed bike?
@Apreche - Why are you profiling fixed/single riders? I am all about functionality over style and ride a fixie. Just because that would be your motivation (and is quite possibly the motivation for others) don't assume that it's the case for everyone.

I ride fixed and it's got nothing to do with being trendy. So maybe that's a factor to some people but it's most certainly not a major factor.

comment How long should a well maintained chain last and what can I do to prolong its life?
@ChrisW - Thanks for the info about the lube... that makes sense. The gear case does look like it would protect the chain. I wonder if fenders would be similarly effective (plus they would keep me and anyone following me drier)

@Soo Wei Tan - 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner is a myth. It's physically impossible to combine shampoo and conditioner, since shampoo is (very slightly) acidic and conditioner is pH 3.5 (more acidic).

I'm not doubting you, Chris. It just seems counterintuitive.

Thanks heaps for the suggestion. I didn't mark this as the answer simply because it's not quite answering the question. Still a great idea and I appreciate it. Your answers are always high quality and it's always difficult to not mark them as the 'right' answer.

I can't believe I'm too zealous with my cleaning! I'll try your suggestions and keep a better log to see how I progress.

Interesting comment about the chain gauge. I'm very gentle with it and it's a single piece of pretty strong metal so I doubt it's been damaged, but I'll check it out.

+1 for fenders. I've been meaning to get a set. Interesting comment about the lube having a cleanser. I find that hard to believe though. How can it degrease and grease simultaneously?

That is an awesome looking bike. Well done!

comment How is bicycle fit affected by switching from a riser bar to a flat bar?
+1 for the suggestion to look at add-ons for your bars. I had a flat bar bike with aero bars and it worked really well that when there was a headwind or I was in a hurry I could drop onto the aero bars and fly along!

comment Determining front & rear derailleur compatibility
Beware: I have changed just a cassette and it completely messed up the shifting. Even my LBS couldn't sort it out. I'd make sure you run everything past the LBS (and even get them to fit it all) so that if it doesn't work out they will sort it out without costing you too much.

Another solution I've seen is the Jump Stop. Site: n-gear.com. Ebay: cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/…

and I'd also need to get a new cassette. The prices seem to be getting pretty high when the alternative of just changing the big chainring to a smaller one might achieve most of what I'm after.
