comment Is a recumbent trike faster than a non-recumbent bicycle?
I have real concerns about the options on passing other bikes. On my commute, I ride across a bridge where the bike paths is, lets say, optimsed for upright bikes. Sometimes, there are motorised scooters coming in the opposite direction. There is no way of passing safely and at speed in this situation.

@ChrisW, I forgot to add the comment to "engage the brain" when following other cyclists. We are not lemmings, at least I'm not. But I do take your point that there some riders that don't "engage the brain" when riding, even when they are fully aware of the rules and the conventions.

I also commute to work in Germany, around the Cologne area. Luckily most of my route is on bike paths and forest trails. However, for the short section where I need to go on the road, I just follow the cyclists. In general, use your common sense and safety first. The German drivers are usually quite tolerant to the cyclist.

comment Protecting gadgets against rain during touring
Among the many good answers, don't forget about the effects of condensation. Make sure that your protective cover is breathable. I lost a phone once due to condensation.
