Clacking noise as right crank goes 'over the top' once per revolution Check the simple stuff too. I recently had the exact same problem with my new bike - a clack every revolution when in the small ring (same pedal position as you too!) - and it turned out to be the front derailleur cable end hitting the crank arm. Just bend the cable away from the crank. |

Converting a MTB to a Road Bike Smooth tires first (friction and noise), then improve the engine (you :-). IMO, weight is too costly to address, gearing not necessary to address. |

7-speed MTB cassette on 8/9-speed wheel hub, where does spacer go? I accepted zenbike's answer as most correct for my actual question. As to the implied question "why did the proper placement result in incorrect engagement", I think lantius was right: LBS missed some basic incompatibility between old cassette, new wheel, and proper spacer. I took the parts back to the LBS, and they ground down the spacer to make it thinner. |

How can I tell a bike is safe after a crash? A great list and in the spirit of "how can I tell" |

7-speed MTB cassette on 8/9-speed wheel hub, where does spacer go? I'll get some better, less greasy pics :-) I honestly didn't even think to replace just the rim. |

Is it harmful to shift RD while climbing standing? No broken spokes, but the rim cracked (the bright line in the 2nd pic) and bulged out. I only noticed because it started rubbing on the brake pad. Actually I knew it was a little warped for a while, but only in the last month have I been standing from stops and on hills. So could easily be cause and effect. |

Advantages of higher quality cranksets Maybe just my confusion. I wasn't sure you really meant better cranks would shift better; I guess that's where I started thinking gears. |

Advantages of higher quality cranksets The question asks about crankset, which I take it is combination of crank arms and chain rings. Your answer is (I think) aimed at chain rings only; what are the benefits of upgrading the crank arms in addition? |

Patch or replace tube? +1 for replacing with spare tube on the ride then patching it later. And once patched, put that tube back in the seat bag as another spare. |

Should inner tube have excess length? Yes, and I already +1'd you for it :-) I would have just added my comment to your answer if I could at the time. |

Is it harmful to shift RD while climbing standing? Thanks all responders. I have a better idea what I'm wearing out faster, and better climbing techniques to avoid the wear (and obviously fatigue). I won't give up climbing standing entirely, but I'll give up full-power shifts ;-) |
