comment Is there such a thing as frame failure?
That's pretty much what I was looking for (not that I thought to ask it that way): whether there were MTBF stats. But it sounds like, overall, it's not even enough of an issue that it's even discussed much. Certainly, it seems there's nothing like a recommendation to "discard after X miles", which one would expect if the issue were real (assuming the industry is properly regulated)—it's just hard to believe that something can be that durable (I change my phone every six months)!

This is my concern. How many tens of thousands of miles can a frame be ridden (and left in the rain and tossed on the ground) before there's a real chance that it will just "go". Everything fails (catastrophically) at some point. So the question is: has this ever happened with a bike frame; has it ever just "gone", suddenly; after how many miles — 50k, 100k? Or is this pretty much unheard of.

I can't imagine what the problem would be either, but I wondered whether there was any data to back up that assumption. For example, under what kinds of cap or hair configurations are helmet performance tests conducted; what are the recommendations of the standards bodies and manufactures regarding hair or hats?

@Daniel: Fortunately, there's none of that to worry about.
