comment slow bike…is it the chain?
The brake should not be touching the wheel rim, except when braking. If they intermittently touch the wheel, then the wheel is out of true, something that can also cause the symptoms you describe.

comment Will I notice the benefits of changing wheels?
I can second applying some skepticality to wheels with weird spokes. My bike came with some Shimano wheels that had fancy spokes that attached & adjusted at the hub, not the rim. When I needed some replaced after a few years, the bike shop had to special order them at not-insignificant cost. Another few thousand miles down the road the only choice to fix broken spokes was a new wheel. Fancy & lightweight tend to tradeoff for durability & future costs (not to mention now-costs).

comment If I can't find the hole causing a flat tire, do I need to replace the tube?
This makes me feel wasteful—I would have just swapped for a new inner tube and trashed the flaky one.

comment How to keep my manbag in place
A lot of messenger bags have a strap specifically for this. Timbuk2 calls it a cross strap and even made a video showing how to use it.

comment Where to mount a headlight if the handlebar is obscured by a basket
While this sidesteps the question, helmet lights really are awesome to have. When you point it right at a driver, they are sure to see you.

comment Off road lights
I use a Nite Rider MiNewt USB as a helmet light for street riding and it's great—fairly lightweight and compact. It would be a good addition to some powerful bar mounted lights for off road riding.

comment Recommended budget waterproof jacket
I'll second the no-Goretex recommendation because it is a relatively heavy fabric.

comment Are slick tires worth it for commuting?
Good point about less width increasing harshness, but his Marin San Rafael is already on 700x35c tires, which are a good bit thinner than 2.2" or even 1.5" tires.

comment Recommended budget waterproof jacket
In American English "waterproof" isn't used as a noun, but always an adjective—would it be confusing for British speakers to change the post title to "...waterproof jacket"?

comment Which states or countries have stop-sign-as-yield laws for bicyclists (Idaho stop law)?
The body of the question is fine, but the title is a bit confusing. Perhaps the title could be, "Which states allow bicyclists to legally treat stop signs as yields?"

I was trying to keep this general, so as to be useful to others; I didn't realize that so much would depend upon the style of components.

All of the bikes you mention are single speed; are you saying you want one of those with 3 chainrings up front?
