I'm an alumnus of UC Santa Barbara where I was on the cycling team. I also broadcasted sports for KCSB-FM 91.9 while I was there. I love working on bikes and making wheels. I have helped many of my friends with all kinds of repairs, and I hope I can help you get your bike working well, too.

comment What to use to clean your chain (and cogs)?
You can even use a disposable plastic water bottle with a regular mouth. I keep the chain in after dumping out the degreaser (I prefer citrus degreaser) to fill it up and rinse it with water. After I drain the water, I cut the bottle open and pull out the chain.

comment Bottom bracket making noise, should it be fixed now or can I wait until regular maintenance?
I was typing an answer that covered the same main points when I saw the red bar notice that the question had just been answered. That said, if the bike is that new, your bike may very well be under warranty, so take it in as soon as possible.

comment Why should I wear bicycle clothes made of spandex?
@Jared I recommend using bibs rather than bike shorts+suspenders. They're basically the same as what you say she's using now, except bibs have built-in suspenders, and they're probably more comfortable than auxiliary suspenders.

comment How long should it take to rebuild a wheel?
Daniel: Thanks for pointing that out. I thought that the wheel was new but with the undesired hub, so I addressed it as I did. Now that I see that the question does not mention anything about the age or wear on the current wheel, I realize I should have included that reusing old, used spokes can lead to disaster and should be avoided.
