My name is Mike Bradshaw. Please contact me if I can be of assistance as one of the Moderators of Ask Different on Stack Exchange.
Note, If you are emailing for help answering your question as opposed to help with moderation of the site, be sure to send a link to the question. I can't answer every troubleshooting question here (my paying customers have priority). If you have an exceptionally tough problem to solve, I do love challenges. Help me help you by asking a stellar question.
I'm often in the chat rooms here, but I'm also very much on the twitter as @bmike.

What tips do you have for making temporary “get me home” repairs? I've heard they work very well for compatible 8-, 9- and 10-gear chains. |

What tips do you have for making temporary “get me home” repairs? This dollar bill trick is one of my all time favorites. A dollar in the repair kit can be most handy indeed. |

How many miles and/or commuting seasons will a modern internal geared hub last? @zenbike what environment are your miles? @iantius and @Neil - feel free to pit your comments as real answers - they stand alone and maybe we could get some consensus on specific models? Thanks for the great answers so far all! I'll hit up some local bike shops and answer myself later. |

How many miles and/or commuting seasons will a modern internal geared hub last? So basically, I will probably ride the rest of the bike well into the ground before a sealed hub. I could service the hubs when I swap out rims and spokes. |

combining friction shifting with indexed components Do elaborate on that in the original answer! The effective radius of the friction lever might be different than the indexed one. Well done! |

Why is the front brake lever on the right if you 'drive' on the left and vice-versa? Great question! Most studies show grip strength is lopsided for righties but more even for lefties - so it would be easy to speculate that putting the device needing most force on the right would make sense. An alternative theory is the gears were placed on the right to allow the majority of righties fine motor control over finicky friction levers with a straight cable pull. I have no research to show which came first - the brake or the shifter - just lots of long training rides with geeky cyclists and bike shop discussions over beers. |

combining friction shifting with indexed components That's just a fact of friction shift - has nothing to do with the rest of the components being packaged with an index shift mechanism. (it's of course a good point - but more an answer to is his friction gear appropriate for him) |
