comment Is having your hands “on the hoods” of drop handlebars safe for braking?
Hood braking is a problem if you're not comfortable keeping your hands on the hoods. This was the case for me. Switch your brakes up or get a new bike if you're not comfortable putting your hands where they can quickly access your brakes.

comment How to choose the right Citi Bike?
These seem like prudent instructions, though I would say it's more convenient to check tire inflation before undocking the bike. That is one of the few things one can do while the bike is docked. You cannot, for instance, spin the wheels while docked to check for proper alignment.

Eyeballing the pedals seems like a good start, but just a start.

comment How to choose the right Citi Bike?
@AlanGerber I agree swapping bikes is relatively easy if a full, functional station is nearby. But this isn't always the case. Plus, Citi Bike is made for convenience. Going out of ones way to find one that works seems to me to defeat the purpose.

comment How to choose the right Citi Bike?
@NeilFein It is possible to go for a quick "test" ride, but very inconvenient as switching bikes requires you to re-dock the bike after riding, request a new code, and then undock a new untested bike. I think any Citi Bike rider would agree that it's overkill to actually "test" a bike, especially considering Citi Bike rides are short; they can be taken out for no longer than 45 minutes.

@w4rumy I included the speed test anecdote to demonstrate that, apparently, not all Citi Bikes are equal. I'm looking for an efficient way to find an optimized bike at the dock station.

This is definitely a comprehensive answer, but I'm not sure how practical it is for a very specific type of bike (and dock) that will be used on a ride that will last no longer than 30 min (time limit). Looking for something quick and easy -- maybe even just eye test instructions.

comment Why participate in an organized century ride when I can ride the route on my own?
@wdypdx22 - Just marked a few correct. The others I'm not certain have a definitive answer.

Has anyone else heard of this "pull the hands" technique? Any more details about how to pull it off?

comment Where can I find statistics on the growth of US & worldwide bicycle use and business?
True! LAB does have some fairly comprehensive data. But it's all old! Where can I find some 2011 or even 2010 data?

comment How should I deal with bike messengers + others (salmon) riding the wrong way in a bike lane?
"Ring your bell!" - one of the best responses I've seen here - Not that I have a bell. Does anyone?

comment How can I teach my capable 20-something friend to ride a bike?
These are all great responses! Of course, I can't say any is the "correct answer" until this guy gets up and riding. I'll keep you posted, in question form of course. Thanks!
