I'm a commuter mostly, about 20km a day, for the last 15 years, in all weather. Sydney weather is not too harsh though.

I've done a little cycle touring. Most recently circumnavigating Samoa in early 2011.

I did a few weeks as a bicycle courier back in the 90s whilst on holidays from my permanent job.

comment How often should disk brakes need bleeding?
What make and model hydraulics disk brakes do you have? I have Shimano LX (before SLX), commuting for 3 years at about 5000km a year, and ok, I should have serviced them by now as a precaution, but they still feel fine to me. I also asked my LBS about a year ago and they said they feel fine too (they're a good shop). I've been through about a half dozen sets of pads in that time. Although I might try bleeding them now you've reminded me ;-)

@DanielRHicks At least this is based on over 1000 opinions from a cross-section of people and qualifies as credible research. +1 and I'm marking this as an answer until something better comes along. Surprising results though. It would be interesting what similar surveys would produce here in Sydney. The ones done by the tabloid newspapers always come up with negative attitudes towards cyclists.

Did you try this the instructions in this video? youtu.be/-XUFVrl0UT4 (See my answer below). Basically work the tire bead into the well of the rim on the opposite side of the last bit you're trying to get on. Easier to understand by watching the video. Use straps to hold the tire if you need to. This is easy and doesn't require other tools, and because the tire has more room to get on, you will avoid pinches.

comment How to measure the correct belt drive tension?
Gates, who manufacture belts used on bicycles, recommend NOT twisting the belt, due to risk of damage and then failure at high load. There are other warnings in their belt handling instructions document.

'conclude' rather than 'prove'. You can't really prove this.
