comment En masse bicycle commuting
I can understand (and agree with) the whole "With great power comes great responsibility" thing, but there's also the argument that we pay the same taxes that paid for these bike paths, and in some circumstances were actually more responsible as we are the activists that get these built in the first place. So I stand by my argument - we (regular cyclists) have just as much right than the average citizen to use these paths. If you want to bring your child / dog / smizmar out on the path they're your responsibility.

@Brad: I disagree completely - the expectation of a bike path is for everyone to be able to use it - newbies, commuters, even folks training for serious competition. Your statement is akin to saying "people shouldn't drive on the highways because that's for 17-year-olds talking on their cel phones and people towing 20-foot-long landscape trailers at 15 mph to be able to drive without getting hurt." There needs to be a basic recognition that "public" bike paths are there for all of the public, which means recognizing varying levels of user. </rant>

comment Do higher speed crashes result in less serious injuries.
I wonder how much of this has to do that the Tour riders are also riding on a controlled route (no morons opening car doors, plenty of hay bales to crash into, pre-scouted routes with minimal potholes, etc.).

comment Would a military helmet make a safe alternative to a bicycle helmet?
Bike helmets are actually designed to shatter, diverting much of the force away from the underlying area. This is why you're supposed to replace your helmet after a crash - if it's cracked it won't be able "fail" appropriately next time. That being said, I'd pay good money to see someone riding with a full-on jet pilot helmet, complete with radio mic and polarized HUD visor.

"If a passenger was getting out I'd use that body as a cushion..." Ha! Yes. :-) +1.

comment How do I put grips on mountain bike handlebars?
I prefer hairspray because the grips tend to stay in place after the hairspray has dried. I had a friend tell me Aqua Net, too; evidently there is a difference.

comment What should I consider when buying a respirator?
I'd consider wearing my full-face sealed respirator on a ride just to freak my neighbors out. :-) I'd probably run into airflow issues pretty quickly, though...

I'm on my second set of cleats; I noticed immediately that they were more difficult to get into than my old ones. So there's probably some wear-in on the springs.

comment Problems with gears after re-attaching front chainring
Right - the reason I went with a torque wrench is because a) I love any excuse to buy a new tool and b) I could easily see myself snapping the head right off the bolt if I used my 1/2" socket wrench handle with a hex socket. Glad it helped. The chiba monkeys at the local bike store couldn't figure this one out; I had to call a friend who knows this stuff.
