comment How long do Garmin's cycling GPS devices take to get an initial GPS lock?
@imel96 they can quite safely assume that they are where they were switched off and have better antennas.

comment Shoaling etiquette
Another comment about the momentum thing: If you still have momentum while the rider in front of you stopped you probably were too fast and too little observant of traffic.

You're simply uncool when having a kickstand. That's all. ;-)

comment Alternative Firmware for Garmin Edge 500
Well, writing them gave me a standard response "thanks for your feedback we always try to improve our products" and the issue aside: Being a software guy I could imagine other fun things one could do when being able to develop custom software (besides consuming power and making the battery run out ;) )

For some devices they at least provide linux kernels. Certainly it's not enough for a full system but might be a start for enthusiasts. :-)

comment Who has right of way at a staggered crossroad
I have a similar crossing on one of my routes, I treat it as two independent crossings with the typical right-before-left route ... but for answering I'm too confused about the arrows on the wrong side of the road ;-)

comment Tips on buying a beginner mountain bike
I'm quite sure that riders like Lance Armstrong are looking for the est bike and that most manufactures are happy to have their brand shown in such an environment. Still I wouldn't take that as an argument (as long as my body, riding style, needs, ... are different)

comment The Scope Of The Lance Armstrong Doping Scandal
cyclinginvestigation.usada.org - this might is a good primary source for things which had been "rumors" the above answer had to quote back when it was written

that's why I didn't make it an answer ;-)

comment What's special about bicycle socks?
Looking at modern running shoes - they're designed to return as much energy as possible back for the next step ... absorbing socks might be countereffective, there, too.

comment Are bicycle registration websites any use for recovering stolen bikes?
eBay and craigslist - many stolen bikes are listed there. I know of at least one case where a stolen bike found its original owner again due to those great services ;)

comment Velodrome atmospheric conditions
Just curios: Who are "the commentators" in this case? TV people, or ones at the venue etc. At least TV commentators talk a lot on long days. ;-)

comment You just had an accident, what's next?
"If it's someone else's property, like a car or a mailbox, and there's damage, leave a note with your contact info." - In German jurisdiction just leaving a note might be illegal ("unberechtigtes Entfernen vom Unfallort" / "unauthorized leaving of the accident scene") - You have to try to identify and contact the owner or at least register the accident with the police. - I'm not saying everybody does though .... sometimes their are people witnessing this, though

comment What bikes will be used by the competitors in the Mountain Bike Olympics?
As addition: I don't know if there's some country-check on that site but German broadcaster ZDF has an interview with German rider Sabine Spitz with some closeups of her bike in studio: zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/hauptnavigation/startseite/#/beitrag/video/…

comment Why don't cyclists wear all-encompassing motorcycle-style helmets?
Even with traffic speed one should know what happens behind. Mirrors, of course, allow doing that almost unconsciously ;-)

comment Why don't Tour de France riders always ride their TT bikes?
If there weren't so many rules about what bikes are allowed riders might even consider to switch when eing in a break-away-group or something ... like starting ;-)

comment Should I get a road bike?
So what's the actual, notable benefit of the road bike? And well, I like the "One more than you currently have ..." comment from above, but somehow I have to quantify it "yes, I spent X thousand Euros on a bike" ...and renting, yeah, probably I have to find a place to rend some bike in roughly the price range I'm willing (able) to spend ... I think it isn't useful to get a cheap rental road bike and then being disappointed ... while that might save me money ;-)

comment What advanced cycling skills are useful for a commuter or city rider?
A big part of he car noise actually are the tires on the road. And there are ideas in different legislations to require some "sound machine" for electric cars.
