comment What's the deal with compressionless brake cable housing?
Isn't longitudinal wire housing only for shifters? At least for road I've always been told to use coil for brakes. Or is compressionless brake designed specifically to allow use of longitudinal wires in brake cable housing?

comment Why did my tire explode?
Very interesting. Indeed, on closer examination, it's split right along the discontinuity. Reviews of other similar tires on Amazon point to the same issue - blowouts along the seam at high pressures. Will switch to a solid tire I guess.

Thanks, but w.r.t. your chart, I am a bit over 180lb, and inflated to the maximum pressure indicated on the sidewall. In fact, part of the reason I got a tire rated to a higher pressure was that I very often get pinch flats on a lower tire pressure!

Thanks for the answer! To be clear though, the sidewalls are black - the white bit to the right of the tire in the picture is a deep rim. Do you think the colorized white stripes on the tire could be a similar point of failure?

@DanielRHicks It's 700x23, and about 2 months old, maybe a little less even.

If you're interested in the modern equivalent, check out "crosstops" or "interrupter" levers.

comment Shoaling etiquette
@DWGKNZ That actually makes a lot of sense for the situation you describe. Maybe modify your answer to include "in very high traffic situations" or "when suitable infrastructure is available"? In moderately sized North American cities a more common situation is a lone novice cyclist passing dangerously close in the tiny bike lane we've been afforded. It's quite hard to pass them afterwards, because usually there's a constant stream of traffic in the lane proper.

Disagree with the bit about not having to stop if you still have momentum. One of the most frustrating forms of shoaling is when someone you've just passed, and are clearly much faster than, catches up to you at the next light as its changing and pulls in front of you. Don't be that guy. More often than not it's dangerous too if sharing a bike lane or similar --- I'm certainly not expecting someone to try to squeeze past me as I kick off from the curb, but it happens a lot.

comment how do I paint a bicycle chain?
Are they really that much more expensive? I see some on Amazon for $8.99. Even my LBS only wants $15 or so for them.

comment Waht is the difference between Shwalbe's Basic compound and Performance compound tyres?
Haven't ridden both, so I won't leave a proper answer. I switched from a continental basic compound (~$40) to Schwab performance (~$65). The tires grip better, but somehow feel less sticky on the road during acceleration. Absolutely worth the money for me.
