comment Riding a Mountain Bike in the city
My bike is a "hybrid" road bike, so I've got the mountain bike-style handlebars, which is really nice, especially when I'm hauling my bike up the stairs at my work.

comment How to get my feet out of SPD pedals?
Like others have mentioned, you will fall over trying to unclip at least once, and it will probably be at a busy intersection and everyone will be looking at you. My wife's first unclip accident (well, she didnt' get uncliped, that was the problem) happened at the beginning of a big ride we were on last summer. She ended up needing help getting up as her leg and foot were pinned under her and the bike. Totally sucked.

Excellent point about thinking ahead. I always like to unclip my right foot when I'm getting near a stop light/intersection, or when in a parking lot. Saves me from having to worry about my foot being stuck on the pedal when I need it somewhere else.

comment Creaking from cranks/spindle. How to fix?
I had a creaking noise like this (coming from my left pedal, only on a heavy downstroke), and then just down the street from my house, my left crank fell off. And that's the story of how I learned to check bolt tightness after every few rides.

I have, it's a pretty good read. Lots of good common-sense things to look for, and if I recall correctly, some nice diagrams

comment Can you be ticketed for breaking the speed limit on a bike?
@nhinkle - surprisingly, no (I work on a college campus). We did issue a "reckless driving" ticket to a skateboarder who was going too fast and ran into the side of a car (dented it, even - he was dumb, but okay) as he was the one who caused the accident. And I do know of a few DUI tickets issued to bicyclists at CU Boulder.

comment Can you be ticketed for breaking the speed limit on a bike?
This is correct. I work for a police department, and you can be issued a citation for speeding while on your bike (we would be more likely to issue a careless/reckless driving/riding citation). Riding your bike while intoxicated can also land you with a DUI (driving while under the influence).

comment Transporting groceries
I remember seeing a horrible movie where they were transporting a volatile chemical by semi, and they suspended it in the air in the back of the truck with rubber cords/cables.

@jdv dangit, you're right, and now it's too late to edit my comment :)

I wonder if you're riding too far back on the seat (ie, the seat might need to be moved straight back), and when you're hitting the bumpy area, you might have just enough leverage to tilt the seat up. Also, pictures are worth a 1000 words :)

comment How to make my wife's bike lighter? Is it worth the cost?
My wife started with a Raleigh cruiser, which she could barely lift over her head to hang it on the wall. We bought her a Specialized Dolce Sport, and she can practically throw it in the air it's so much lighter. We were both amazed at how much easier is it to move, and she has a lot easier time riding (less weight = faster, and way more endurance). It was well worth the expense.

comment Basic toolkit for bicycle maintenance
I was told to always carry a chain breaker with you - even if you don't know how to use it, someone who comes along and stops to help you might. It makes for a long walk when you can't do anything to repair a broken chain.

@neilfein Wow, do I feel embarrassed... thanks for the correction. This is what happens when I try to multitask!

I heard the same thing from several bike shops - the lever should leave a nice imprint in your palm once you force it shut.

comment Why should I wear bicycle clothes made of spandex?
@Johan - clarified: I thought the shorts looked weird. My coworkers still make fun of me when I come in wearing my shorts, but they don't have much to say when I point out that my butt isn't sore after riding in because of them!

comment Why do cyclists shave their legs?
I imagine it's easier to clean the rocks and gravel out of the wound without leg hair in the way, matting up the wound.

comment Why is a proper road bike pedal preferred for road bikes?
When I went clipless, I actually bought these mountain bike pedals because I could ride clipped in or have nice bumps to stop my foot from slipping off the pedal if I was wearing my regular shoes.

comment How can I keep my feet from falling asleep while riding?
I do the same thing - when I'm riding on a river trail we have here, I try and kick the dandelions while I'm stretching - gives me something fun to do!
