I did the tuneup at a community bike workshop; people there seem to favour MotoMaster White Grease, so that's what I used. I also asked the folks at the Mountain Equipment Co-op; they recommended Phil Wood Grease

Cool, thanks for the tips. I'm guessing that dropping antifreeze into the brake cables is probably a similarly bad idea. My search for cable lubricant made specifically for bicycles was mostly unsuccessful except for this; are cable lubricants for automotive/boating/etc basically the same thing? Anything specific I should look for in a general cable lube to indicate that it would work well on a bike?

comment How can I look unsafe to a car driver but be safe
It's better to just ride a bit further in than you normally would, so that you can give up space when a car comes along. The flipside of this situation is that if you force a car way out into the other lane, there's a better chance of it getting in a head-on collision, or of the oncoming driver barrelling into you in an effort to avoid one.
