comment The back brake on my bike is not functional, is it illegal for me to cycle?
Shift your weight back and modulate the brake with a little more care then

comment Does a typical floor pump have an integrated one-way valve?
I know the valve is held closed when the inner tube pressure exceeds external pressure, and opens if the external pressure exceeds the internal pressure. However, the OP asked if the pump relies on this, and my pump demonstrably does not rely on this, apparently using instead an internal return valve.

comment Does a typical floor pump have an integrated one-way valve?
I can see how OP could think it possible, since the valve is held closed by pressure from inside the tube. So, in principle, the pump could force the valve open briefly just by exceeding the pressure inside the tube ... I suspect it would be very inefficient and much harder work though.

you sure it's not just verbing gutter (indicating the side of the road)?

you can certainly try, but whether they'll hear over their headphones and background traffic noise is an open question

comment Why am I breaking a ridiculous number of spokes?
The town bikes with a very upright seating position, which sound similar, generally get called "Dutch bikes" in the UK. Now I wonder what the Dutch call them.

comment Why am I breaking a ridiculous number of spokes?
Out of interest, I've seen a couple of references to a "Eurobike". They're both in scare quotes, and I have no idea what it means. Any chance of an entry in the regional vocab or terminology wikis?

comment Are there devices to moderate speed on mountain descents without braking?
I can do 30mph fixed with no problems, and it's not a particularly high gear - if you find a gear that will get you up, you just need to practise spinning on the way down (note that you can just let the pedals pull your feet round if you relax, and you get a similar engine-braking effect to downshifting in a car). Or, of course, stop at the top and swap sprockets ...

comment What should I consider when buying a respirator?
No idea I'm afraid: some googling turned up this which is mostly about the totobobo mask Benzo mentions, and some online shops with customer reviews like this

comment Matching Rando bag and seat-attached saddle bag?
Acorn look similar to Carradice in style, and it looks like they're available from wallbike too.

comment Are fixed or floating SPD-SL cleats most suitable for a long commute?
Think OP is asking about SPD-SL cleat varieties: red (fixed) vs. yellow (6 degree float)

comment thin-soled cycle touring shoes
Most walking shoes have thicker, softer soles than you really want for toe-clip use: they're less efficient, don't spread the load as well, and often have lugs or treads that catch on the pedal cage when you kick into the clip.

comment Is it really necessary to physically cross (interlace) the spokes on traditional wheel lacing?
Man that was a long post for a misunderstood question :-)

comment Dictionary of regional vocabulary differences (US vs UK)
I would totally have read "hex wrench" as a socket rather than a key or bit, since other wrenches fit around something, not in it.
