I'm fascinated with bicycles...with how they work, how they're built, how they're used, and what they have to offer. I'm pursuing an MS in Civil Engineering specifically to design and construct cycling infrastructure for transportation planning.
I have worked with several bike-share programs providing free access to bicycles for students, workers, and retirees. In addition, I volunteer as a bicycling safety advocate with local schools.
I appreciate lugged steel, leather saddles, Bridgestones, and pink bar tape.
My next big goal is a cross-country ride from Maine to California.

What tools on a multi-tool do I actually need? This is really good advice. If you don't know how to fix it without a manual, no multi-tool will help on the road. |

What tools on a multi-tool do I actually need? This will depend totally on how far you will be from civilization and/or a bike shop. If you're touring the Great Divide, you'll need everything necessary to make it home. If you're puttering around town you can get away with a few hex keys. I regularly carry different kits depending on where I'm going and how long I'll be away. |

Fixed Gear Chainring Centering Instead of just pasting links it is more helpful to summarize and spell out whatever information you've provided (pictures and diagrams help.) Links are broken over time and content on third-party sites changes. Do include links, however, as it is courteous to the original author. |

Good Quality Road Platform Pedals? Luckily the vast majority of platform pedals out there are under $100. |

Can a chain-lock be better against cutting than a U-lock? And all of the added lock mass is a moot point if a thief can cut/bend/smash through whatever it is you're locking up to. (A good example are bike racks which are bolted to the ground.) |

Cycling Shorts and underwear Have you considered swapping in a narrower saddle? Some saddle cuts are too wide for guys with narrower pelvises and will chafe regardless of how much material is between your skin and the saddle. |

Is having your hands “on the hoods” of drop handlebars safe for braking? If you ride responsibly, riding on the hoods in traffic is way safer than riding in the drops. Having your head up makes you more visible and makes it easier to see. The only time it'd be an issue is if you were darting between cars and whacking your handlebars on side-view mirrors (a decidedly unsafe thing to be doing...) |

Number of gears for a racer Also that the size of the cassette is dependent firstly on the rear hub and secondly on the frame dropout spacing |

Brand new disk brakes are barely stopping the bike Make sure you purchased long-pull BB7 calipers and not the short-pull versions specific for road bikes! |

A bike for city commute - disc brakes, bar-end shifters, tires Plus disc specific road frames are way less common than rim specific. |
