Social network for bike users Have you chatted with the OCD? "OCD stands for 'Ordre des Cols Durs' - 'the club of the hard cols' - a French cycle club of which we are the British-based English language equivalent. OCD Cycloclimbing acts mainly as an information exchange for cyclists who enjoy cycling in the mountains." They have invaluable maps and trip reports for Alpine and Pyrennaean tours and could really use a decent web presence. |

What are the parts needed to build your own fixie? On 8, a front rim brake is legally required if you're going to take it off the track in some jurisdictions, and is just a good idea safety-wise. |

What's special about bicycle socks? Often sports socks are much more expensive than regular socks. |

Is it possible to estimate road grade while riding? Do you have to calibrate the Edge altimeter often? A buddy had a barometric altimeter and he had to dial in the current altitude based on maps twice daily since minor variations in air pressure could lead to substantially different readings, but as long as he did that, it agreed well with the map in the places where we checked. |

Will a Miyata 912 be able to take wider tires/bicycle racks/fenders and still handle well? What is your goal with the fenders? Fenders that pass inside the forks and prevent water from being driven towards your chain & bottom bracket take up space and so limit the size of tires that you can run. Half fenders like race blades don't take away clearance from tires. |

brake lever will not return I only have an anecdote. I had a front sidewall blowout after descending a steep narrow packed-earth track on 700x28s. When I looked for causes I found a worn line on the sidewall a little above where the rim would be, and a ridge such as you describe on one brake-pad. My best theory is that after a longish tour (Atlantic to Mediterranean through the Pyrenees with zigs and zags) with a maladjusted brake-pad where I was braking softly, I then did a white-knuckled descent putting more force on the brakes which did my tire in. |

brake lever will not return If this happens on the outside of the rim, then that ridge can eventually start chewing into the tire's sidewall. |

Is it better to have a slightly big or slightly small bike? @WTHarper, thanks for the link. If correct, "Chainstay length....too short, bike is too jumpy" might explain the difference between tandem handling and single handling, or maybe its just that every maneuver has to deal with the momentum of your stoker. |

Is it better to have a slightly big or slightly small bike? @WTHarper Agreed. As you lengthen the wheelbase your single will handle more like a tandem. |
