Like the weight limit, there are many rules which effectively ban other advancements like more aerodynamic water bottles. The UCI have similar rules for track racing, which have made the traditional hour record practically impossible to beat (covered nicely in the documentary about Chris Boardman's final hour-record attempt)

This nicely summarises why I suspected this wasn't really going to work. As you say, just analysing frontal-area/positioning based on photos definitely sounds more productive... Thanks!

@R.Chung (heh, so is it safe to assume you are "that" Chung, or just a huge fan? :P). That link is interesting, "CFD simulations predicted the drag areas with an accuracy of about 11% for RANS and about 7% for LES". If that's the accuracy with a laser-scanned model and proper CFD sim, a photo-based model and a fluid-simulator intended to make pretty images probably isn't going to be terribly accurace..

Here's the actual graph of cone-cell response. The eye is definitely most sensitive to green parts of the spectrum, but squishy-human-related-stuff is never that straight forward, nor is light. E.g most lighting you will encounter (i.e not lasers) will be spread over the entire visible spectrum (like this), and materials/colours vary widely in how they reflect this (meaning fabric that is "bright" under sunlight might be almost invisible under streetlight)

@freiheit My main question is "Could there be any worthwhile insights gained from this", which I think could have a good objective answer from someone who has attempted this before. Edited the question slightly - does it seem any better? I'm not totally sure how to word my question in a way that seems less chatty/discussion'y
