comment What criteria should I be looking for in selecting a new hybrid bike model?
To avoid suspense, I suggest you look at something like this: ebay.co.uk/itm/…, because it has hub gears, built in lights, mud guards and carrier and disk brakes all for cleanliness, all weather use and reliability. It doesn't have much of a chain guard, so expect dirty trousers.

There are a few more questions I think you need to answer for yourself. Do you need a light bike to carry up or down stairs? Do you want to ride fast in cycle specific clothes and change at work or ride steadily in your work clothes? Do you want to keep your clothes clean while you ride? How much stuff to you need to carry? How hilly or windy is your normal ride, and how far? Do you want to use the bike for day or multi day touring or just getting around? Is the bike a car replacement or in addition to a car? Are you in the UK btw. I am. I have various opinions, depending on your answers.

comment When do I know the drum brake is at the end of life and needs replacement?
What kind of drum brake? Shimano drum brakes are packed with grease, renewed during service. Perhaps that is your problem?

comment Will Slick Tires Work for a Mountain Bike Ridden by a Heavier Rider?
There is a great section on touring tyres in the middle of this touring bike vendors brochure - Thorn (pdf) . It might help.

comment Will a change from 26x2.10 to 26x1.95 tires improve speed?
@BPugh, No, I didn't bother. But it was a while ago. Tires might be made to tighter tolerances now, or standard rims might be wider as I think the standard mountain bike tires are wider. I would still just try myself.

comment Alfine 11 chain guard
That's why I will change from a 39 to 38 front chain ring, and as a side benefit, get a better setup for the hills round here. Also, the Chain Glider needs a reasonably narrow chainring, and the current one is quite fat.

comment Can you recommend a fixed LED headlight for a bike with a hub dynamo?
My B&M IQ CYO RT works fine with the dynamo, except when pushing the bike when the light tends to flash. I don't know if any of the LED lights have a bigger capacitor to smooth out the current. The new B&M Luxos 2 with a build in battery looks interesting. Perhaps on my next bike ...

I went for the Lumotec IQ CYO RT, also a big improvement on the incandescent. I thought the day running lights might be worthwhile on grey days, and people are calling the flashing lights drunk magnets. Sadly my always on LEDs are drowned out by all the day running LEDs on modern cars. Oh well.
