I'm a professional PHP programmer with almost a decade of professional experience and considerably more as a hobbyist programmer. I've also had some exposure to Java, Object Pascal and am interested in learning objective C

I've started work on a PHP framework, though it's still at a very early stage and not yet really useful. The current source is available on GitHub.

I've also begun development of a CSS3 elastic grid for use on my own projects and had published that on GitHub as well.

Probably mostly for bringing home the weekend shopping.

The best type is no type. Pay attention to your surroundings instead, the life you save might be your own.

How much pressure are you putting into your tires when you pump them up?

If you're talking 30+ miles then you might want to move weight a bit higher up the priority list, especially if you live somewhere hilly. A lighter bike will use up less of your energy reserves over the same distance compared to a heavier bike, and heavy bikes can really be unpleasant to pedal up hill.

comment How can I prevent cars from passing me too closely?
They sell high-vis tabards in the UK that say POLITE on the back. At first glance this looks like POLICE. Tends to put people off being especially dickish. :)

comment Is there legal recourse to drivers passing too close?
In borderline cases a camera wouldn't be much help, but if you capture his wing mirror brushing your handlebars as he goes past it's not a massive leap to think he was less than 3 feet away.

Having small change stolen from you is far less likely to result in serious injury or death than careless driving near you. I think being carelessly overtaken is legitimate grounds for concern.

Your courier friend shouldn't be cycling so close to parked cars that avoiding opening doors is not an option.

comment Cycling on Manchester Metrolink tram routes
My experience of Manchester is they can, but they never do. On the way to work today I saw a cyclist jump the lights in front of two policemen, and they pretty much just ignored him. I'm starting to see why cyclists around here are so bad at sticking to the rules :)

Sadly the only remotely low traffic period around here is night time, and I'm definitely not getting on a bike when it's not broad daylight. As for training, I already did cycling proficiency, I understand how to act around other road users. The problem is certain other road users either don't know how to act around cyclists when it comes to passing or just don't care.
