I'm a professional PHP programmer with almost a decade of professional experience and considerably more as a hobbyist programmer. I've also had some exposure to Java, Object Pascal and am interested in learning objective C

I've started work on a PHP framework, though it's still at a very early stage and not yet really useful. The current source is available on GitHub.

I've also begun development of a CSS3 elastic grid for use on my own projects and had published that on GitHub as well.

Chew with your mouth closed and don't talk with your mouth full. People will think you have poor table manners otherwise.

comment Deterrents against partial (component) theft
Not sure how effective that will be. My understanding is that its' opportunity that's usually the deciding factor in a bike theft, the bikes or parts that are easiest to steal will be picked off even when next to more thoroughly secured gear of higher value. Of course if it's a fancy carbon frame it may draw unwanted attention but people without a lot of experience with bikes probably couldn't tell a good one from a cheap one.

comment Is it safe to Cycle with an Umbrella?
I don't know about where you live, but I have never ever seen anyone in my life on a cycle with an umbrella unless it was a clown on a unicycle. Even if I had, just because everyone does it doesn't make it legal, or even a good idea. You see people cycling on the pavement all the time here even though it's very explicitly against the law to do so and it would still be a stupid idea if it wasn't. It sounds like you've already made up your mind and are looking for answers that validate your choice. Sorry but I'm not going to do that even if you claim my answer is "not useful".

comment Why are bike frames getting so much bigger
Also, it's a good way to offset the fact that metals such as aluminium aren't as strong as steel. An oversized ali tube still weighs less than a standard gauge steel tube for same stiffness.

comment Are there any high power bicycle generators?
The relationship between power and brightness is not liner with LEDs (or any other lighting tech with which I'm familiar). The more energy they consume the more gets wasted as heat. A 4 watt LED is not twice as bright as a 2 watt LED.

comment Is listening to music dangerous while cycling?
Thanks for sharing, nice to hear someone talk from actual experience and able to admit their own stupidity in the hopes someone else won't repeat their mistake.

It's not the lack of sound that's the problem, it's the sound that's irrelevant to the task at hand distracting your attention that's the problem. Deaf people usually do have some sense of hearing (complete deafness is rare) and can hear car horns and the like. Headphones not only drown out noises that could alert you to danger (kids, dogs, the noise of a car coming up behind far too close), they also mean not all your attention is on the task of cycling. You need your wits about you on a bike and any kind of possible distraction should be avoided at all costs.

comment How do I deal with a dog chasing me when I'm touring?
Really bad advice, it could get you an animal cruelty charge if witnessed and it gives the dog something to grab hold of with its jaws (your leg!). You could also lose your balance or plough into a car or a pedestrian while letting the dog distract you.

Pepper spray also isn't legal in all jurisdictions (it's not in the UK for example)

comment What does “modulate” mean when referring to brakes?
and if you lock the front wheel, especially on a downhill slope, you stand a pretty good chance of damaging your face!

comment What are the main differences between road saddles and mountain saddles?
Not so sure about that one, the saddle on the mountain bike I bought recently was one of those skinny things and I had to replace it with something wider because I like my butthurt to be the kind caused by getting into arguments on the internet rather than having an actually hurting butt :)

What jurisdiction is this? My suspicion is US/UK.

comment Arguments for/against bike lanes?
I wouldn't put that they make red light jumpers more obvious as a con. The more obvious those buggers are, the better as far as I'm concerned! I try to be a good cyclist and when I'm a pedestrian nothing pisses me off more than being half way across a green pedestrian crossing just to nearly get knocked over by some tosspot who doesn't think the red traffic light applies to him (and it almost always is a him).

What, Boris didn't festoon the TFL busses with bike racks yet? You're letting the side down, Mr. Johnson!

comment Which bus networks allow you to transport a bike?
Thanks to the near monopoly of Worst Bus, I wouldn't count on using public transport in this country with a bike! Besides, I don't think it would be very fair to the other passengers to have to work their way around a bike, especially at rush hour. It would be great if they started adding bike racks, but I doubt they'd see any profit in it.

comment Why do we rarely see recumbents and almost never see velomobiles?
I don't know about you, but I'd feel really unsafe being that close to the ground in traffic, especially with some big articulated lorry coming up from behind who might not even see you at all.

comment What type of brakes are best for mountain bike racing?
I'm not sure any braking system could cope with the amounts of mud shown in the first picture!
