I'm one of them :) I used the term Latex loosely... some people are allergic to Latex, and others (myself included), find Latex to get a bit itchy after a while. Nitrile doesn't have these problems - and also is more resistant to tears (though I've not noticed this difference myself). Nitrile is latex, but it's made synthetically, and doesn't have the Latex proteins that cause allergies.

Yeah, I've seen people leave a lock places to save carrying it and thought that it was a good idea - but you give a potential thief plenty of time to work out how to pick the lock under cover of darkness with no interruptions. In my area, I avoid it - I guess it depends where you are and how trusting you feel!

comment How long should a road tyre hold its pressure?
I'm wondering if temperature has anything to do with it? I'd expect high temperature variation to cause the tyre to lose pressure quicker... what's the climate like where you guys live?

comment Does the plastic cap on a Presta valve serve any purpose once fitted to a rim?
I am pretty lazy... but you make a good point about the fragile top part of the valve. I guess if it were a bike that I only ever used on the road in nice dry conditions I wouldn't need them, but I'd also have more time to worry about the little things like that! I guess I'll leave them on and stop being so lazy. :)

comment What is a reasonable speed for long distances on a bike?
+1 This is a difficult question, with as many answers as there are people, but this is about the tidiest answer that I've seen anywhere.

comment Upgrading straight handlebars to drop handlebars
Are you upgrading for comfort, or performance? I switched from a straight barred MTB to a road bike with drop bars; it's a massive improvement, but the drop bars are not the main difference for me.

+1 People do rude/annoying things all the time on the road, and if you're rushing and tense it will seem 100x worse. It's all too easy to arrive at your destination all riled up about what was really a minor thing, which really spoils the experience.

comment What type of tires can prevent goatheads?
I've had a pair - and they're horrendous. The problem that they will always have is that, even if they feel as soft as real tyres, the air cannot be displaced to other areas of the tyre and so they don't deform anywhere near as much as even a high pressure tyre. This gives worse traction, a harder ride and more bent rims.

I'm used to losing pressure when attaching a pump to a Schrader valve, but I haven't found this so far with Presta. Perhaps it's just my pump, but I actually need to exert some pressure before the valve will open and I can get a reading - at this point the connection is already airtight and I've filled the gauge/pump. Worth considering all the same - I may test this a few times tomorrow, and see what I'm losing!

700x23 @ 100-110psi, standard (cheap) butyl tubes.

+1 for being specific - I'm seeing a similar rate of deflation, so it's good to know I'm not a special case. Thanks!

Thanks - the high pressure/volume difference is kinda what I expected... sounds like more pumping for me! I'll monitor them a bit more closely in future.
