Yes the "motor thing" is the problem and only comes with tons of practice.

comment How can you speed a road-bike up?
I am a fan of triples and I would like to make a comment regarding weight. If you have a compact crank but need low gears, you are going to save weight in the crank, but ... you will have to put larger cogs in the cassette, increasing weight respect a smaller cassette that you could allow with a triple. If you consider weight overall, you are not saving too much, if at all.

comment Mixing 9-speed Tiagra and 9-speed Deore XT
I just installed the setup that I mentioned in my question: Deore XT long cage, 11-32 cassette and new chain. It works well. There is slight cross-chaining in the large-cog/large-chainring and small cog/small chainring, but I was expecting it. I'll never use that combination anyway.

comment What tricks do you use to avoid damaging cables when adjusting the gears?
Are those the ones that I mentioned before? They seem to be for the very end of the cable. I installed one already. What I want is one that goes where the clamp is going to bite the cable, if it exists.

I noticed the notch. That will help. @Jahaziel: Could you post a link where those cable ends are described? Should I buy the entire cable with such end? And just to be clear, I'm not talking about the cap for the very end of the cable. That I installed without problem

Yes, the derailleur clamp was my problem. The cable got flattened as you say. I adjusted it many times until I finally understood how to tune to rear derailleur. If I glue in advance the section that is going to be clamped, would it help?
