And how do you find people who need them?

+1 for people who live in places with a season of bad weather, but for me personally, I don't have a trainer (why wouldn't I just ride outside) and changing tires frequently is a PITA.

comment How can I check tire pressure without a pressure gauge?
I really recently upgraded to puncture resistant tires, and I don't think that I could guess the pressure like I could in my old, thin tires.

I have a pump with a built in gauge, and I check my tire pressure often. I also press from the top of the tire towards the rim and have learned from practice what about 100 psi feels like for my particular wheel and tire. But this is useless if you don't have a gauge to practice with.

comment What are some ways to keep biking when you have a car?
I just started biking to work. The 60 dollars a month worth of savings on parking for participating in the sustainable transportation program is a big motivation.

Asphalt only, well maintained roads and bike paths; to and from work only; the area is somewhat hilly, but nearly always nice weather (southern California). Theft risk in my area (i.e. around a college campus) is probably fairly high.

@WTHarper Price is the primary reason I'm considering an older bike. Why do you consider a steal frame more sensible?

+1 These are all great things to think about, especially the replacement parts.

@gerrit What type of bike do you suggest? Maybe "road bike" has a narrower definition than I intend.

comment Is pollution a problem in urban cycling?
@SuperElectric They cite another study which states the respitory average of cyclists is 2.3 times higher than car drivers. For some of the harmful chemicals, the intake of the car drivers is higher even taking that into account (e.g.) Benzene, but for other pollutants, the higher respitory rate of the cyclists makes up for the lower pollutants. For example, (in their study), inside the car, there are only 1.7 times more dust / particulates than on the bike, and so the cyclist would be breathing more dust, on average, if the respitory rate is as claimed. But that also varies widely per day.
