comment Techniques for safely leaving a bike for 1-2 minutes in a safe-ish place
Taking the front wheel off seems like more work than locking up the bike.

The weight of the lock and time it takes to lock it up is negligible when you compare it to the major PITA that having your bike get stolen would be. Police report, posting "My bike was stolen" flyers, looking around, calling pawn shops, looking for it on craigslist, etc. Plus then you lose whatever money you put into the bike, and have to buy a replacement. Just lock up your bike. Are you really in so much of a rush that you can't take the extra 10 seconds?

comment What tools on a multi-tool do I actually need?
2x on the chain tool. If you mountain bike much, this could save you from a long walk out of the woods.

Yes crumples rather than "crumble", is quite similar to smashes.

comment What to do with old tires?
You could take them to a community bike repair shop. These guys aren't super close to Irvine but maybe there is something similar closer to you. bicyclekitchen.com
