..cont.. My last touring bike I did 36,000 km of touring. Some chains I replaced after 2000 km, some lasted way longer. The ones that lasted the shortest were used in winter under very different conditions to some of the others. Weather has been the most relevant factor for me. For example I did 10,000 km for Egypt to South Africa where I rode in rain for a total of 20 minutes...

@Rider_X I use a cateye cycle computer and also the ridewithgps website for route planning. When I'm cycling I'm bike touring, covering 80-160km a day average. My tours are usually 3000+ km. The longest trip was 12,000 km. Interestingly I ride with about 20-30kg of gear (plus me at 70kg), so would think that would add to the wear on the chain. Or maybe it keeps me going slow (20 km/h). When I'm touring I wipe clean the chain, only at home do I bathe clean it and even then less frequently to wipe cleaning. Either way, that's my experience, call foul all you want.

comment How can I develop my abs while I ride my bicycle?
If you can't stand on your pedals without damaging your bike, your bike is the problem not your stance. Remember, any use of a bike will wear it down (standing or sitting), that's the point of having one - to use it.

comment Why have 29-ers arisen only recently?
Mountain bike wheels are generally measured in inches, which is the terminology reference I'm making. I agree introducing new terms is confusing, but 700cc was a confusing term anyway - the wheels aren't actually 700, usually nearer 620. So if the new metric (inches - which aren't new anyway, just not road bike standard) makes understanding wheels easier, then we have progress.

Maybe you should read the full sentence. "Although in my opinion mountain bikes are the inferior or their road brothers, they do seem to be more popular", it says 'OR' and concludes "they do seem to be more popular" - which is my opinion. Basically I'm saying I don't think which is 'the best' matters, but popularity has leaned to adoption of mountain bike metrics.

The question doesn't ask what brands, it says which types. The answers have addressed this and not 'solicted debate'.
