comment First cyclocross race - strategy
Cool. It is always great when you can get a good walk through on a course. I will say I've found the times I've done two races in one day I tend to do better in the second race. I think it is mostly because I've done more laps on the course and become more comfortable with it. The one exception to that was the day I did back to back races... Have fun!

Worth noting mountain bikes used in USAC sanctioned CX races cannot have bar ends installed on them (rule 1I1d.)

In the end do what you are comfortable with. If you do the 4/5 and things are too chaotic you can always hang back going down the hills on the first lap. Usually after that races start to get pretty spread out. There is a video of last year's 4/5 race (youtube.com/watch?v=PWN8pUk4GGA) unfortunately it is a backward facing camera but I still think you can see how spread out the race is long before it gets to the descents. Does look like a fun, fast course: strava.com/segments/5939321 Have fun and good luck!

comment 3x increase in endurence in 3 months?
@BenediktBauer some people starting out get in that 'gotta exercise everyday' mode which can really cause issues so I did want to point out they should take at least a day off each week. Personally, for the first couple of months until I got into shape I found taking a day off about every 3rd or 4th day worked about the best for me.

comment Does any rental car company offer bike racks?
Freiheit probably has the right idea but if the bike rental place doesn't have racks there are decent, cheap trunk mounted 2 and 3 bike racks available for < $100 dollars. You could always just buy one at a LBS in Wisconsin and discard it at the end of the trip.
