comment Why ride a single-speed bike?
An interesting perspective, but you're confusing the issue by mixing in suspension. 90% of your upkeep costs are suspension-specific, no?

comment Why are some bikes sold without pedals?
Other very personal choices on a bike are handlebar wrap and saddle.

comment How to avoid turning the spokes while tuning the wheel
In addition to a drop of oil on each nipple, I also tap each a few times with a screwdriver, and wait a while for the oil to soak in. Still, you will always get twisting, so you need to learn the anti-twist technique.

If you've never built a wheel, and try to reassemble one, do not expect it to work well. There is a lot more to wheel building than getting the right parts in the right place.

Why do you think that a new chain every year is a good thing?

comment Do I need a new chain after 1300 miles?
Remember: a worn chain will make new cogs wear faster; worn cogs will make a new chain wear faster. Replace them before they get bad. If both are bad, replace both at once.

comment What is the 3 foot law and which states have it?
Let's get a 3-mile-law: no cars within 3 miles of a bike (except emergency vehicles). Who's with me?

comment What should a big guy look for when buying a road bike?
Remember that most bike stuff is designed to minimize weight, with barely enough strength. For us, weight of bike is not important, but strength matters much more. Especially in frame and wheels.

In bicycle circles, big folks like us are called "Clydesdales".

comment I wish to get fit, therefore should I have a heavy bike?
@meagar: I don't think I explained myself well, but my real thoughts on the the matter are both off-topic and too complex for this setting. Too bad for me.

comment What is the hand gesture for “I'm sorry”?
The picture doesn't make it clear, but your fist is supposed to be against your chest, not out in the air. You're not shaking your fist at someone. Also, in ASL you would bow your head and make a forlorn facial expression. All together, it's pretty obviously not a sign of aggression. A (non-ASL) alternative would be to put your fist on your chest and bow your head.

There's some evidence that you can't exercise to lose weight. There's even some that you can't make yourself lose weight and keep it off. Focus instead on enjoying your life.

Have you decided if you want a roof- or trunk-mounted rack? Or is that part of your question?

Are you asking for a specific product recommendation (usually not a good fit for Stack Exchange)?

comment How can I avoid getting chain grease on my trouser leg
The veclro straps don't slip down for me, but they do open up and fall off. I haven't tried gaiters.

comment For a slightly warped wheel, is it worth getting it repaired?
" tighten the spokes on the opposite side where the brake pad rubs" is bad advice, and I don't want to see anyone copy it. There's no room here for a tutorial on truing, but the basic problem is that you're adding tension as you go; you need to release tension to keep the wheel balanced, and you need to avoid twisting spokes as you go.

This would harm wheel tension and round.

comment Can you shift both the front and back gears simultanously?
Note that I shift the front to a larger & the rear to a smaller (or vice versa). I am not creating slack at both ends at the same time. I am not cross-training.

You use the word "often" but I have never had this problem. I realize I'm only one person, not enough data to be conclusive.

How fat are your tires? I like to ride the biggest tires I can (but not knobbies!)
