When I'm not bicycling, I'm a Linux SysAdmin. I'm on the board of my local bicycle advocacy group.
Bikes are my primary transportation. A 2009 Surly Long Haul Trucker, set up as a commuter and a 2012 Trek Ion CX. I also take the bus, but do not own a car.

How is the riding experience of a Rohloff hub different than derailleur gears? I've pulled a heavy (over 200lb/100kg) trailer on a bike with a hub gear. Being able to downshift all the way after stopping was a big advantage. I think the gearing didn't go quite as low as the touring triple setup that I've also pulled that trailer with, but it's actually really hard to get going from a stop in the lowest touring-triple gear. |

What natural features and governmental conditions contribute to a bicycle friendly town/city? I've never heard of a "Bike Czar" position local, but locally we do have Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Boards (BPABs) that fulfill a similar role, except with each city council member appointing a member (and a couple special members), instead of a single mayoral appointment. That may reflect a difference in mayoral power between Boston and the California cities I'm more familiar with. |

What is the correct way to put a helmet on? While this may theoretically answer the question, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference. |

Good cheap mountain bike without gears or shifter There's many many bikes that meet your needs. Most bicycle companies make a good mountain bike under $1000. Singlespeed's a little less common. You should probably instead ask what things to look for to best meet your needs, or go shopping at a few local bike shops and come back with questions related to the bikes you found while shopping... |

Does a helmet-mounted light affect the safe functionality of the helmet? @mattnz Sure: The combination isn't tested. The standard is testing every helmet design. So the combination doesn't meet the standard because it's not tested. I was running low on characters, though. :) |
