comment Torn. Want to support LBS but they don't carry what I really want
I've found that often if I order something through the LBS, they'll do pretty well at matching the real online price, since they won't charge me for shipping. (it's just one more thing in a big order from one of their suppliers).

comment Is there any rule of thumb for comparing lights rated in lux and lumens?
Lux is relative to distance. That graph is based on lux at 2 meters from the light. What distance is the light in the question getting 35 lux at?

comment Is there any rule of thumb for comparing lights rated in lux and lumens?
For everybody else that isn't familiar with the units: lux is how brightly lit a surface is, candela is (usually) the brightness of the center of the beam, and lumens is the total light output. Candela can be converted to lux (and vice-versa) given a distance. Lumens can be converted to candela (and vice-versa) given degrees (how much of the sphere the light comes out), but most bike lights spread light unevenly.

comment Why are brake lights not common?
FYI, the magnic light has a bit of a "brake light" functionality, since it draws power from the rim moving past, it mounts on the brake, and it is pulled closer to the rim when you brake; so it flares brighter as you're braking. (but turns off once you're stopped)

comment How do I stop punctures for good?
The unfortunate reality is that there is no good way to stop all punctures for good. Even the very toughest tire/belt/tube combo is going to go flat if you hit a self-tapping metal screw, sharp nail, or most other strong sharp things longer than the protective layers of your tire.
