I wish to get fit, therefore should I have a heavy bike? @NeilFein: From a physics perspective, riding a 35lb bike at constant speed over level ground takes exactly the same amount of energy as riding a 10lb bike at constant speed (all else being equal). When you are riding over level ground at constant speed, all of your energy output is going into wind resistance. The heavier bike will require more energy to accelerate from a stop and more energy to climb hills than the lighter bike. However, the effect isn't as great as you might expect, as you must include the rider's weight when making comparisons. |
