Are there brands that sell weather-resistant chains? I live in the UK and I've recently switched from using chains and blocks till they're worn out, to using the cheapest SRAM chain (about £10) and using a cheap chain measurer to keep an eye on it. As soon as it starts stretching I change it, meaning the (much more expensive) block should last a lot longer. |

What do you wish someone had told you before your first commute? +1 for trying to relax. I also commute in central London and really struggle to stay calm. How did you manage to find "a little bubble of calm"? |

How to keep the pants from getting dirty Sounds like a mudflap is the key thing here. I was always sceptical of them until I got my Brompton, which comes with one. Makes a huge difference |

How Strong is my road bike? I've certainly found that I prefer the way a cyclo cross bike handles and "feels", which apart from the physical differences (don't forget cantilever brakes have a lot more mud clearance than centre pull brakes) is the biggest difference I notice. That's probably due to having spent a lot more time riding mountain bikes off road. A cross bike, which is basically a road bike adapted for off road (including the geometry), just feels more "right". My opinion only, of course. |
