comment Patch or replace tube?
@matthew -1 because your comment 'once fitted your question should be academic' is overly optimistic. This assumes that both the tire and rim strip are fitted and installed properly and that there are no pinch flats.

Mix soda 1:1 with water to make a 6% glucose solution for best absorption according to Greg Lemond

comment How do Traffic Lights Notice Bicyclists?
@freiheit laying your bike over the coils will also help to trigger them. Their location can often be recognized by large rectangular cuts / repairs that have been made in the road

comment Brakes periodically make “finger nails on chalk board” sound
nice answer; I would add that if there are many pieces of rock/grit on a pad, it is sometimes easier to scrape off with a razor blade than to pry them out.

comment Should I feel self-conscious wearing cycling shorts to school?
@David you had similar issues when you were 15, so if you could take the time to provide counseling here, you could increase participation in cycling by others.

comment Practical cleaning routine for a commuter bike
hosing it down is fine; even with a strong spray, the key is to spray perpendicular to the axis of rotation (e.g. spray the headset from the side or front of the bike, bb and hubs either straight down or from the front / rear but not side of the bike)

comment Should I feel self-conscious wearing cycling shorts to school?
I don't consider this a relevant question for this site. It is more appropriate for a psychologist.

comment Why would a manufacturer change chainring sizes drastically between years?
Did the cassette also shrink? If so, it's called 'compact' but the gear range might be similar

comment Is pollution a problem in urban cycling?
@unscliced not sure if this is the case - where do you get this information? The force of turbulent air can be much greater than the force of gravity for many of the particulates.

comment What are the pros and cons of panniers vs messenger bags?
+1, just to add to the issue with weight - using a messenger bag with lots of weight might be tolerable while riding, but I found that the uneven stress on my shoulders developed painful and range limiting pain in my neck and upper back. Now I use panniers except for light loads.

comment Single speed conversion chain keeps derailing rear cog under load?
I do it the same way, but I don't find it necessary to lay down the bike or use my feet.

comment Recommended inexpensive heart-rate monitors?
@Wilka actually, I guess these are not wrist-only even though the product info on Amazon doesn't always mention that there is a chest strap. So, I assumed that the most popular ones didn't have a chest strap.

@neilfein, this is correct.

comment What are the reasons for and against wearing a bicycle helmet?
I heard this said in the 80's about the old styrofoam helmets that had a separate lycra cover, that the styrofoam would stick to the road. But I don't think it is any longer valid. @Jay do you have any research to back this up? At the same time I have heard that the main benefits of the leather helmets over no helmet at all is that they reduce this risk.

comment How can I improve my pedal stroke?
+1, scraping the boot is one of the keys.

comment What are the advantages and disadvantages of turbo trainers and rollers?
@Dane, since they make the bike so much more sensitive to your movements, they train you to be able to hold a steady line. I wouldn't necessarily expect that they would help with track stands or other technical skills other than those related to maintaining a straight line and focusing your effort on forward motion, e.g. being able to ride with no hands, take clothes on/off, use your water bottle without swerving.

maybe it depends on the type of plastic? +1 for an innovative and relatively simple idea.

comment Is a “run-bike” equivalent to a bmx bike with no drivetrain?
I am more interested in if there are design aspects that are particular to the teaching goal of a run-bike, and if so, what they are.
