Restoring an old xUSSR bicycle for commuting… Feasible? Silly? This isn't really an answer, so I'm posting it as a comment... It really depends on the price of the components you get to replace the old ones. For example, you can spend $30 on a single lightly-used generic wheel at your LBS/ebay, or you can spend $150+ on a brand-new one. Do all your math beforehand. One thing I will also point out is the condition of the paint/frame is critical in determining cost/labor of restoration. Re-painting a frame is either expensive if you have a shop do it ($200ish or more) or time-consuming if you do it yourself (stripping paint by hand, masking, priming, etc.). |

How do Traffic Lights Notice Bicyclists? I've never had to actually lay my bike down to trigger one of these, though I think it isn't the same everywhere. Usually just a wheel over them works, and of course you can always move up and let a car go over the coils if that doesn't work. I don't really worry about being able to trigger a green light, because where I live, state law allows you to disregard a traffic signal as malfunctioning if it does not turn green after an unusually long amount of time, provided it is safe to do so. |

how to choose inner tubes @Benson Thanks, that's something I didn't think about when I initially answered. The risk of pinch flats is enough to convince me— I changed my mind and my answer based on your insight. |

Why are battery-powered lights so popular? @sleske Yeah, hence the Caveats :). It depends on how you want to use your bikes/lights. I can see why some people would prefer to have a permanent system that is always available. |
