Chamois is the leather or leatherlike layer sewn into padded cycling shorts. Its purpose is to reduce skin friction. Modern pants use artificial materials to achieve the same purpose. Chamois Creams may be applied directly to the skin before riding, and provide additional protection from friction blisters and chafing.
