The side to side movement created by the rider when pedalling is causing the frame to felx repeatedly in ways it may not have been designed for, when it is fixed in the trainer. Maybe the thicker mat will reduce the frame flex by allowing the whole trainer to move a bit?

I'd think that plank is dampening primarily just due to the additional mass -- a thicker mat might give more benefit, but the stability of the trainer on it might not be great.
