If one did this indoors, the fumes are an issue. A nice low cost degreaser might be one of the Simple Green products - they're far less toxic, and pretty inexpensive relative to bike-specific products. | |

The engine oil is better than nothing, but its not going to work as well as proper chain lubricant. On a bike chain, the lube is needed under/inside the rollers, and engine oil won't stay there. Try a proper bike chain lubricant and see the difference. | |
