Mar 19, 2020 at 15:49 comment added Weiwen Ng I strongly agree with @Criggie that we shouldn't use gasoline as a degreaser. It is toxic to you and the environment. If one did this indoors, the fumes are an issue. A nice low cost degreaser might be one of the Simple Green products - they're far less toxic, and pretty inexpensive relative to bike-specific products.
Mar 18, 2020 at 19:39 comment added Criggie The petrol/gasoline is workable, but its not good for your paint or your hands, and safe disposal becomes difficult. The engine oil is better than nothing, but its not going to work as well as proper chain lubricant. On a bike chain, the lube is needed under/inside the rollers, and engine oil won't stay there. Try a proper bike chain lubricant and see the difference.
