I don't really recall any issues braking hard from the hoods since I started serious road cycling in 2001, but I could have a bad memory.

He is correct that it's more aero than the drops. However, amateur athletes don't seem to use it much, even the competitively-oriented riders I've seen.
Sep 30, 2020 at 21:03 | comment | added | Weiwen Ng | FYI to all: a synonym for what juhist and Tod call the corners of the bars is the ramps. This may just not be well known, but Velo Orange isn't the only party I've heard use this term. velo-orange.com/pages/drop-handlebar-selection Also, some parties separate the drops into the hooks (curved part, close to the brake levers) and the rest of the drops. Users can certainly make use of both, even if just to vary the hand position. Also, @ojs may be thinking of suicide levers, which truly were terrible - functional bar top levers exist but are quite rare.
Sep 30, 2020 at 18:45 | comment | added | ojs | @VladimirF you should take into account that the last time this poster saw a bike was in the 80s. Back then the extension levers that allowed braking from tops were terrible and used only on BSOs. Yes, there were road BSOs at the time.

Sep 30, 2020 at 18:31 | comment | added | Vladimir F Героям слава | The second set of brskes is not for cheap bicycles, it is for cyclocross racing and more recently for gravel bicycles. The tops position is used by some riers to negotiate certain types of terrain. Tje tops position is also often used when climbing steep hills while still sitting. Even by professional ridirs and climbing specialists. It is far from useless.
