After releasing the compression plug, the spacers came off easily. Certainly a matter of tight tolerances, stems open up when the bolts are undone.

Mar 11, 2021 at 13:57 comment added Andrew Henle If the steerer tube expands due to the small force from the expander plug, I'd want to see it. A tube that changes shape from that amount of force isn't going to hold its shape when you ride over a bump with weight on the handlebars...
