Apr 23, 2021 at 22:27 comment added Pisco @Michael the chain only wraps half of the chainring, so the move from 30T to 32T only changes the length of chain on the chainring by one link, while chain length can only be adjusted in 2 link increments (inner link + outer link). without knowing anything about the bike, in theory there’s a 50% chance that following Shimano’s procedure for sizing the chain would yield the same number of links for any given pair of chainrings two teeth apart.

Apr 22, 2021 at 14:45 comment added Michael @FrancisFinne: bergfreunde.eu/chain-length-calculator but this only tells you how long the chain should be at the very least when you buy it. You should still fit it correctly.
Apr 22, 2021 at 14:44 comment added Michael @MaplePanda: Why would they make the chain unnecessarily long and leave enough margin for a 32t chainring?
Apr 22, 2021 at 14:33 comment added MaplePanda @Francis Finne You could probably go to a 32t without needing a new chain. Beyond that, it’s simple arithmetic.
Apr 22, 2021 at 13:46 comment added Francis Finne or any other number of teeth for that matter
Apr 22, 2021 at 13:45 comment added Francis Finne Is there an easy way to figure out what length of chain I would need if I change my 30t chainring to 38t and If it would even function correctly?
Apr 22, 2021 at 13:07 comment added Francis Finne thats an improvement! Very useful thank you!
Apr 22, 2021 at 12:42 comment added Michael Good point. Chainrings with up to 38 teeth (e.g. Wolf Tooth XTM8K9638) are available for the 96mm BCD crankset. Assuming such a "large" chainring fits. Would increase top speed at 90rpm cadence from 34km/h to 43km/h: ritzelrechner.de/…
