The first bike boom was because bicycles were less work than horses, and also related to emancipation of women. Cars could be viewed as "labour-saving bicycles" despite needing much more maintenance. Cars were the first "assisted bikes" from one viewpoint. | |

Do take into account the fact that people’s tolerance for mechanical faults is larger for cars because one can always just put their foot down a little more. On a bike, we care more about every little source of damage and drag. | |

It is possible to own one car and keep it running with minimal downtime using standard spare parts. By comparison, relying on a bike for transportation means that one must maintain a small collection, not just with different types of tires, but also with redundancy until the difficult-to-find parts are replaced.
