I know that I didn't provide a real answer because no one can tell if clamping the stem without the expander will create damage. Cannondale definitely says the expander is needed for the structural integrity of the steerer. Your image with the bottomed out stem could also be indicative for a crushed steerer. I just wanted to point that out. | |
