The "some play between the cranks and chainring in the direction of rotation is normal" clause is what's relevant here. Basically it's fine, they all do it.

To summarise the parts on play in the chainring:

  • Only tighten the self-locking nut on the left end of the axle a few degrees if the chainring has play from left to right, i.e. when it can move slightly to and away from the frame.
  • Never tighten this nut too firmly as that might damage the bearings.
  • The play you encountered in the direction of rotation is expected, harmless and necessary.
