Note to self: it's neither cable sheathing, nor cover, nor wrap, nor ... . It's cable housing.

I installed the two parts

  1. shift outer cap with long tongue, and
  2. rubber shield

as shown below, but I'm not absolutely sure this is right.

Long Tongue Ferrule

If I put the rubber shield (the one on the right in the picture) behind the cable stop (i.e. to the left of the cable stop in the image — wedged between the cable stop and the shift outer cap with long tongue), the length of the Bowden cable sheathing (cover)housing will effectively change, depending on how much tension is carried in the inner cable — and that tension is different for each gear.

This "changing of length" would be a lousy setup for a proper tune-up of shifting. Hence the rubber part must be on the right of the cable stop (as it is above), but then nothing holds it in place, and I'm sure it'll soon start floating to the right. Keeping an eye on a "moving part" that shouldn't be moving during every stop would not make for worry-free riding.

Can you comment?

How do you stop the rubber shield from wandering unless you lock it behind the Where should I install shift outer cap w/ tongue, which introduces a compressible sheathcable rubber shields?
